Soothing dry, itchy skin with an Oatmeal‏ Bath

Today I wanted to share a cheap and easy way to soften & soothe dry, itchy skin.

An oatmeal bath can bring you relief from a rash you may have due to an allergic reaction, eczema, dry skin caused by indoor heaters, or anything else that’s causing your skin to itch.

DIY Oatmeal baths for dry itchy skin

What you’ll need:

• 1/2 cup – 1 cup of organic oatmeal, any type of unflavored oats will work

• A piece of fabric ( I cut a square out of an old t-shirt), you can also use an old sock or a cotton muslin bag

•  A rubberband or piece of string

• Optional: lavender essential oil

What to do:

•  Put your oatmeal in the center of your fabric (or in your sock/muslin bag) and tie it up.how to do an Oatmeal bath for dry itchy skin 3

• Fill the tub up with warm water

• Squeeze the oatmeal pouch to release the liquid – the bath water will turn milky white.

• Optional:  Stir 6-10 drops of lavender essential oil into the water, which is also great for soothing skin and is very calming.

• Soak for 10 – 20 minutes

• Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat your skin dry when you’re done.

I’d love to know if you try this!

Do you have any skin issues that you need relief from?

I’d be happy to do a future post about it. Leave a comment on facebook or let me know anonymously, here.

The lowdown on Olive Oil

What can olive oil do for your skin? http://thelotusroot.com/the-lowdown-on-olive-oil/

Extra virgin olive oil has been used for centuries for health & beauty.

Read on to learn my top 7 favorite reasons to use olive oil everyday:

1. Olive oil is rich in vitamins E and K, fatty acids + antioxidants, which are all great for the skin topically and internally.

2.  When applied to your skin, olive oil helps build a barrier to prevent moisture loss. This keeps your skin soft and supple. It also provides a layer of protection from damaging environmental toxins (air pollution, uva radiation, tobacco smoke, etc).

3.  It can help keep your skin youthful. The antioxidants in olive oil can help prevent the loss of collagen & elastin caused by free radicals (which can cause wrinkling and sagging of the skin).

4.  Olive oil has an anti-inflammatory compound called oleocanthal, which can help calm inflammatory conditions like psoriasis, eczema and dandruff. Oleocanthal has been found to have an anti-inflammatory effect similar to Ibuprofin. [Source]

5. The polyphenols in olive oil have antimicrobial benefits, which can help protect you from skin infections caused by bacteria & yeast.

6. Olive oil has a longer shelf life than many other vegetable oils.

7. According to a recent study, “extra virgin olive oil may reduce DNA damage caused by consuming genetically modified soybean products. “ More info here: http://www.oliveoiltimes.com/olive-oil-health-news/olive-oil-may-reduce-dna-damage-gmo-soybean/40424

Tips:

  •   Olive oil is best absorbed by the skin after showering.
  •  Use it for massage or as a carrier oil to apply essential oils.
  • Add 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil to your diet everyday to get the health benefits.
  •  Look for organic, extra virgin olive oil in dark glass. Note: Its come out recently that a lot of extra virgin olive oil sold in stores has been mixed with another, less expensive oil. (Check out this list of some of the fraudulent oils)  It’s worth it to pay more to get the real thing. Here’s a brand I stumbled across while doing research. I’m not affiliated with them, but wanted to give you a good idea of what to look out for in quality olive oil.
  • Its best not to cook with olive oil. According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, “Due to its chemical structure and a large amount of monounsaturated fats such as oleic acid, cooking makes extra virgin olive oil very susceptible to oxidative damage. Consuming oxidized, rancid oil is not going to benefit your health, so when you need an oil to cook with, coconut oil is the ideal choice, because it is one of the only commonly used vegetable fats stable enough to resist heat-induced damage.”
  • Store your olive oil in a cool, dark spot.

It’s my mission to give you a truly natural option for skin care products that you can trust. To take the guess work out of the process, so that you can live your life, instead of spending all of your time researching ingredients + searching for products. I’ve formulated my products with sensitive skin in mind, and have focused on ingredients that have a long shelf life. I’ve used reusable, recyclable and/or recycled packaging for each item, and will continue to improve the packaging as my line grows (biodegradable lip balm tubes are on the horizon).
I believe in voting with my dollar – I love supporting independent, sustainable businesses, and I’m so happy that I get to do so when sourcing ingredients for my products.
I believe that being your most vibrant self & helping the planet can go hand in hand.
True, radiant health is not just about what you eat – it’s a lifestyle.
Let’s let go of the guilt that comes along with taking care of ourselves.
Consider this your permission slip for self care.

Finding safe skin care products (that actually work!)

Tell me if this sounds like you…

You get frustrated when looking for safe skin care / beauty / personal care products.

You get tired of reading endless lists of ingredients…

You find it hard to figure out what works (without a lot of expensive trial and error).

You wonder which natural ingredients are effective, and which ones are added simply because they sound pretty.

I know how tricky it can be finding a product that isn’t loaded with chemicals, or figuring out if that natural + organic product is really what is claims to be.

To make it easier I wanted to share this helpful app created by the Environmental Working Group: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/app/

You can download it to your phone and look up any ingredient you may not be familiar with.

(You may remember that I mentioned the EWG in this post on finding a chemical free + effective lip balm.)

The EWG database is great, but it isn’t perfect. There’s still a ton of research to be done on the effects of these chemicals on our health.

We are bombarded by so much everyday, and we shouldn’t have to worry about what we’re putting on our skin.

I’m on a mission to change this.

I’m putting together a free guide that will make it easier to navigate through the beauty aisle.

It can be a full time job figuring out what’s good, what’s bad, what works & what doesn’t. I want to make it easier for you.
